Book Chronicles Man’s Rise from Southwest Virginia to the Secret Service

Jan. 21, 2012 – Joe Dye’s book, From Appalachia to the White House, tells of his journey from patrolling in the police department to his years in the secret service. Dye served during the terms of Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.

Of all the dignitaries he met in his journeys, Pope John Paul II was the most memorable, says Dye. “I was delighted to have the opportunity to shake his hand.

His years in the secret service weren’t the most frightening years in his life, says Dye. His scariest adventures involve learning to fly a plane.
